The Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) visited the Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA) for a 2-day visit to benchmark the Authority’s certified Quality Management System (QMS) and exchange insights on strengthening quality service delivery across Botswana’s regulatory bodies.
The benchmarking visit follows BoMRA’s 1SO 9001 certification, awarded by the British Standards Institute (BSI) in April 2021, making BoMRA one of the few Botswana regulators to hold the certification. NBFIRA sought to gain insight into how BoMRA has implemented and maintained its certified quality management system, as part of its own drive to strengthen service delivery to the non-bank financial sector it regulates.
BoMRA’s Quality Management achievements have become a stepping stone for pursuing wider international benchmarks. The Authority recently completed a five-day WHO-assisted self-benchmarking exercise (11–15 August 2025), using the WHO Global Benchmarking Tool to assess its regulatory functions against the requirements for WHO Maturity Level 3 (ML3), which is the global standard for an integrated, fully functional pharmaceutical regulatory system.
NBFIRA regulates Botswana’s non-bank financial sector, including insurance, pensions, capital markets, asset managers and non-bank lenders. BoMRA regulates the registration, manufacture, distribution and safety monitoring of medical products in Botswana.
