In relation to the medical devices including IVDs registration scope public notice released in January 2025 as well as the feedback from the previous medical devices stakeholder engagement, the Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BOMRA) is calling for an extension in the previously proposed timelines related to medical devices, including IVDs registration and retention
NOTE:
- The deadline for retention of all listed medical devices including IVDs shall be extended to 30th September 2025. All none retained, will be removed from the Medical Device Listing Register from the 1st October 2025.
- Retention for registered medical devices including IVDs is on their yearly anniversary date.
- All Medical Devices called for registration will be removed from the Medical Devices Listing Register effective from the 1st of October 2025, except for those recently added in the scope (Class C&D).
- The deadline for registering the devices recently added to the registration scope (Class C and Class D (all imaging medical devices included) shall be extended to the 30th June 2026. They will be removed from the listing register effective from 1st July 2026.
- Registration for all other medical devices, Class B and Class A (including notifiable devices), shall be from 1st April 2026 and 1st October 2026 respectively and they will subsequently be removed from the listing register after 1 year. Voluntary registration for these medical device classes will be allowed from 1st October 2025 though.
- For medical devices including IVDs called for registration only one (1) exemption cycle will be allowed, with the second one considered only when the registration application has been submitted.
